Course outline
Healthcare is a troubled sector in need of innovations: new goods, services and business models that can be replicated and distributed creating value to both the innovator and the user. Innovations require a bit of inspiration and a lot of perspiration. Creativity can’t be learned from books, however, service systems, production processes, markets, and business models follow regularities, that a prospective innovator can’t ignore.
This seminar is about innovations in healthcare from two perspectives.
The Business Model Canvas (BMC) is a simple but powerful way to get an overview of productive activities. It requires the definition of key elements and their relations: offered value; customer segments, channels and contacts; resources and how they are organized into processes and key partnerships; and cost and revenue models.
The Demand-supply Operating logic (DSO) claims that Healthcare is not one industry with one logic, but rather a cluster of overlapping business models. These emerge when demand and supply – what needs to be done and what can be done – meet in different ways. Emergency is one DSO; it requires a different business model than, say, Prevention, another DSO.
BMC and DSO together form a powerful conceptual framework for developing and focusing innovative ideas.
