Lt Gen Manoj Kumar Unni graduated from AFMC Pune and was commissioned in the Army Medical Corps on 27 February 1977. He did his MS (Surgery) in 1983, DNB (Surgery) in 1987 and M.Ch (Cardiothoracic Surgery) in 1990 from AFMC Pune. He also trained at Royal Adelaide Hospital, Adelaide, Australia from 1993 to 1995. During his illustrious Service career of more than 40 years, the Gen Offr has held various important appointments. He was Senior Advisor (Cardiothoracic Surgery) at Military Hospital (CTC) Pune and the flagship hospital of the Armed Forces, the Army Hospital (R&R) New Delhi from 1998 to 2008. The General Officer also served as Associate Professor and Professor, Cardiothoracic Surgery at AFMC Pune. He has pioneered Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery and Beating Heart Coronary Surgery in the Armed Forces.
He has held both administrative and professional appointments at various Armed Forces Hospitals from August 2008 to November 2014. He Commanded 167 MH at Pathankot and was Dy Commandant at both Command Hospital (Central Command), Lucknow and Army Hospital (R&R), New Delhi. He was appointed as Major General (Medical) of the Northern Command in December 2013 and on promotion, became the Commandant of Army Hospital (R&R) New Delhi in October 2014.
He took over the coveted appointment of Director General Medical Services (Army) on 01 Jul 2015. He was elected as the Colonel Commandant of the Army Medical Corps in July 2014. He has been appointed as Honorary Surgeon to the President of India from 01 July 2015. The General Officer has taken over the apex appointment of Director General Armed Forces Medical Services, (DGAFMS) and Senior Colonel Commandant of the AMC on 01 July 2016. 5. For his professional excellence, selfless devotion towards patient care and dedication to duty, the General Officer was awarded GOC-in-C Commendation Card in 1997, Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM) in 2008, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) in 2015 and Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM) in 2017.
