Dr. Jaanus Pikani has been practicing surgeon in head and neck oncology, hospital manager of National Cancer Centre and Tartu University Hospitals (www.kliinikum.ee). He has secretary-general of the Ministry of Social Affairs of Estonia and the chief of staff of the President of Estonia.
Dr. Pikani has been an active member of the team that orchestrated the transition of the Estonian health care from the Soviet-type system to the most cost-efficient health care system globally recognized by the World Bank. Dr. Pikani was among the initiators and architects of the Estonian Genome Project (www.geenivaramu.ee/en), a globally unique population-based health and genome databank of 50,000 participants or 5% of Estonian population as of now.
Currently Jaanus is an entrepreneur and consultant in health care, medical technology, and technology infrastructure companies. Dr. Jaanus Pikani is the chairman of the Tartu Biotechnology Park (www.biopark.ee) and board member of a number of life science and health care companies. He is also chairman of ScanBalt, a biotech meta-cluster organization in ScanBalt BioRegion, composed of the health and bio-economy communities in Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, Sweden, Northern Germany, Northern Netherlands and North-Western Russia with more than 60 universities and over 3000 companies active in the region (www.scanbalt.org).
