Dr Pavan Asalapuram is a scientist-cum-entrepreneur, who’s passion is to provide ‘simple solutions to the complex health-care problems’. He is interested to develop cost-effective but reliable biomedical diagnostics that can be of ‘real-use to the needy’. Pavan’s interest spans around the tropical bacterial/viral diseases with a special focus on drug-resistant tuberculosis, sexually transmitted infections.

Pavan is a pharmacist by education and trained biotechnologist, desired to develop novel molecular diagnostic methods. After the formal graduate education from Madras Medical College and Anna University in India, Pavan moved to Sweden and worked as a researcher in world’s top universities/research organisations like Royal Institute of Technology-KTH, Stockholm University, Karolinska University and SciLifeLab, which is the Swedish national center for molecular biosciences with focus on health and environmental research.

Pavan has played a major role in developing five diagnostic platforms and published about 20 scientific articles and holds 2 international patents in biomedicine. Pavan has developed successful collaborations in 16 countries with researchers, clinicians, policy makers and WHO national reference laboratories in Americas, Asia and Europe.

From his graduation, Pavan is involved in several European Union research projects, where he has experienced the horizons of health care systems between industrialized and developing countries. Having gained the experience, Pavan has established companies in Sweden (EMPE Diagnostics AB, ApiRays AB, Flair Kids AB) and in India, he is working on EMPE Diagnostics India Pvt. Ltd., Mitti Innovations, White Stone Diagnostics. Pavan’s aim is to provide diagnostic solutions that can deliver confirmatory diagnostic results to the clinicians/doctors within 10-60 min, even at the resource-limited clinics/diagnostic labs. If the patient can get appropriate antibiotic treatment from the first clinical meeting or hospital visit, it is possible to reduce the spread of antibiotic resistance, which is threatening the world.
