Ambassador of Estonia to India
Mr Viljar Lubi, after receiving his first degree in economics from the University of Tartu, Estonia, acquired his masters degree in political science from the University of Tallinn, Estonia. He has also complemented his academic background at the University of Sussex, UK, and at the Estonian School of Diplomacy.
Although V. Lubi started his working life in the private sector (insurance business), he soon entered the Civil Service, at first as an official in the Ministry of Finance. From 1999 onwards he has worked at the Foreign Ministry, initially in the press and information department and later in foreign economic policy department. 2002-2006 he was an economic counsellor at Estonia’s embassy in London.
After returning from the United Kingdom he took the job as the director of the general affairs division in the EU department. In August 2009 he took a position of a counsellor (economic) at the Estonian Embassy in Washington, DC. After his return from the USA in August 2011 he was seconded to the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications in Tallinn, Estonia.
As the director of the EU and International Cooperation Department his responsibilities involved a wide range of EU policies the Ministry is charge and also being the principal foreign affairs advisor to the Minister of Economic Affairs and Communications. From January 2013 V. Lubi resumed his diplomatic work and was sent to New Delhi to be the Estonia’s first residing Ambassador to India.
